They’re open to all VCU students, no matter your major or experience level—everyone’s welcome!

A project based course, students will learn about design principles, tools, and develop digital literacy skills using the Adobe CC suite of tools. This course will focus on how to apply design thinking discovery methods to the creation of digital prototypes for web and mobile applications using Figma. Students will apply basic design principles to projects, explore visual communication methods, utilize the Adobe CC programs to wireframe, build personas, journey maps, and design effective webpage and mobile prototypes for clients.

This course provides an overview of the financial resources and options available to entrepreneurs seeking to launch and grow their startup businesses or products. Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of crowdfunding, business loans, capital raising, angel investors, venture capital, and other funding avenues. Through case studies, guest lectures, and practical exercises, students will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to make informed financial decisions for their startups.

Innovation Intersection: Industry and Entrepreneurship

This program will help students develop the technical and inter-cultural skills needed to succeed in our interconnected, tech-driven world.
Students will learn how to wrangle, visualize and analyze massive data sets using SQL and Python. To further develop their ability to succeed in the workforce, students will participate in group activities requiring collaboration and communication, and experience realistic virtual reality simulations of workplace interactions. Students can expect to work hands-on on projects from organizations like MOMA, Doordash, and YouTube as they learn to apply both technical and inter-cultural skills and articulate their learnings to a potential employer. Students also learn cultural web application nuances relevant to developing web applications that are welcomed and accessible by all users. Companies, governments, and non-profits alike need data analysts who understand cultural and geographic nuances, and are capable of collaborating across differences. This program will help students develop the technical and inter-cultural skills needed to succeed in our inter-connected, tech-driven world. Throughout the program students will develop the ability to collaborate on technical challenges in a diverse business environment and grapple with real-world case studies featuring international organizations. Students will analyze data using Excel, and present culturally-relevant visual data stories using Tableau. Students can expect to work hands-on projects from companies like Netflix, Spotify and the United Nations as they learn to apply skills to real-world situations. Digital marketers are positioned to set the tone for how we shop, connect and share ideas across the globe. Companies everywhere need marketers who understand cultural and geographic nuances, and are capable of collaborating across differences. This program will help students develop the digital and inter-cultural skills needed to succeed in our interconnected, tech-driven world. Students will learn how to use Shopify, the leading global ecommerce platform for small businesses. Students will each build their own online ecommerce store. Then, students learn how to acquire customers for their online store using key social media channels and search tools such as Google, TikTok, and Instagram. Students can expect to work hands-on with companies like Bumble, Zillow and Noz Sunscreen as they learn cultural and geographical best practices related to ecommerce and digital marketing. This course explores the human-centered design paradigm from a broad perspective. Students are exposed to human-centered design thinking and experiential client activities. How to Get a Job: Personal Branding and Networking

Learn how to build and leverage your social network in order to develop authentic relationships with others, increasing your visibility and connections with folx who can help advance your career aspirations. (Prerequisites: HCDN 351, HCDN 352) This course allows students to engage in an experiential nonprofit client scenario working through human-centered design methods that solve a community need specific to social innovation. This semester students will work with The Little Ram Pantries project on product development and planning. The Little Ram Pantries project seeks to make the Ram Pantry more visible by deploying miniature pantry boxes around the campus. The project’s two goals are to a) mitigate student food insecurity by increasing the number of students using the emergency food, and b) increase visibility of the Ram Pantry around campus to lower the stigma surrounding its use. VCU is the first school to deploy a program like this to mitigate student food insecurity.

This course is a cross-disciplinary, project-based course where students will build on the foundational principles and practices of visual design by directly applying their skills to create a magazine for Shift Retail Lab. All students will experiment in constructing content through design thinking, graphic design, branding, photography, copywriting, communications, and event planning.
By the end of this course, students will have created the first issue of Shift Magazine and planned a launch party to introduce the issue to the VCU and Richmond community. Students can expect to achieve beginning to intermediate technical competency in Adobe InDesign through online instruction modules, assignments, and instructor support. All students will be given remote access to an Adobe Creative Cloud license while enrolled.
Shift Retail Lab has been selected as winner in the Learning category as a part of the 2023 Innovation by Design Awards for Fast Company. Shift was also named as an honorable mention in the Urban Design category as part of the 2022 World Changing Ideas Awards for Fast Company.

This course is a cross-disciplinary, project-based course where students will build on the foundational principles and practices of visual design by directly applying their skills to create a magazine for Shift Retail Lab. All students will experiment in constructing content through design thinking, graphic design, branding, photography, copywriting, communications, and event planning.
By the end of this course, students will have created the first issue of Shift Magazine and planned a launch party to introduce the issue to the VCU and Richmond community. Students can expect to achieve beginning to intermediate technical competency in Adobe InDesign through online instruction modules, assignments, and instructor support. All students will be given remote access to an Adobe Creative Cloud license while enrolled.
Shift Retail Lab has been selected as winner in the Learning category as a part of the 2023 Innovation by Design Awards for Fast Company. Shift was also named as an honorable mention in the Urban Design category as part of the 2022 World Changing Ideas Awards for Fast Company.
